The difference is that, historically, Pentecostals have felt more at home singing their theology, or putting it in pamphlets for distribution on street corners. [14] Wacker (1996) looks at the bitter fight between existing radical evangelical groups and emerging Pentecostals between 1906 and 1916. If a person with the gift of tongues is not sure that a person with the gift of interpretation is present and is unable to interpret the utterance him or herself, then the person should not speak. [56] Pentecostals teach that those with the gift of tongues should pray for the gift of interpretation. [68] Pentecostals do not require that an interpretation be a literal word-for-word translation of a glossolalic utterance.

This day gave birth to the Pentecostal understanding of the Spirit and provided the theological and experiential framework for the Azusa Street Revival in 1906 (Horton 50). This passage, therefore, far from encouraging any modern revival of "tongues," should, on the contrary, discourage it — especially when one discovers (as Pentecostalists themselves admit) that there are other sources of speaking in tongues besides the Holy Spirit!" The invisible mission is, fittingly, insensible to the person to whom the divine Person is sent, the visible mission sensible.

We felt great; blissed out in the divine. You do not know how many graces God is bestowing on you these days when the Holy Spirit is working in a special way. It has its foundation of faith and practice in the Scriptures and the vital experience of its constituents is scripturally oriented. Zwingli contended that when Jesus declared “This is my Body, take from it and eat.” He was speaking symbolically of the bread and that the Lord’s supper is a memorial as opposed to the Catholic (and to some extent Lutheran) understanding that the bread is transformed literally into Jesus body and the wine transformed into Jesus blood (transubstantiation).

Spirit baptism is said to occur either at the time of conversion (through repentance and forgiveness) or subsequent thereto. In any case, it certainly bears no resemblance whatever to the spiritual gift described in the New Testament and, if anything, it is much closer to shamanistic "speaking in tongues" as practiced in primitive religions, where the shaman or witch doctor has a regular technique for going into a trance and then giving a message to or from a "god" in a tongue he has not learned.... (This) comparison with shamanism will not seem terribly far-fetched, especially if we understand that primitive shamanism is but a particular expression of a "religious" phenomenon which, far from being foreign to the modern West, actually plays a significant role in the lives of some contemporary "Christians": mediumism.24 A Byzantine Catholic writer, Helle Georgiadis, editor of the ecumenical review, "Chrysostom", reinforces the judgment of the above Russian Orthodox theologian: "From the standpoint of Eastern spirituality the contemporary Pentecostal movement appears as a positively alien environment for growth in the life of the Spirit.
